Names of genuine voters deleted from rolls: Pondicherry AIADMK

Anbalagan memo asks Election Commissioner to restrain authorities

PONDICHERRY: The Pondicherry AIADMK State Committee secretary and MLA A. Anbalagan has urged Election Commissioner Navin B. Chawla to restrain authorities from deleting names of genuine voters from electoral rolls.

In a petition submitted to the Election Commissioner during the latter's visit to Pondicherry on Friday, Mr. Anbalagan alleged that names of a number of voters were deleted on the ground that they did not either possess the Electoral Photo Identity Cards or that they were not residing in the addresses found in the voter list. The details of names and addresses of such persons were not displayed and this had caused confusion and difficulty to voters who could not ascertain whether their names were in the rolls or not.

The Election department here was intimating the deletion to the old addresses of voters but they had already moved to new addresses.

He said that while more than a lakh of voters had applied for inclusion, only around 60,000 voters were included throughout the Union Territory. At the same time an equal number of voters were deleted, he alleged. He cited an instance in his own constituency of Uppalam, where only 2,133 out of 2,750 persons were enrolled as fresh voters. An equal number of voters was deleted, resulting in victimisation of genuine voters, he alleged.

He urged the Election Commissioner to direct the election machinery here first to display full details of voters deleted from the list before coming out with final publication of voter lists on August 2.
