PONDICHERRY: Pattali Makkal Katchi MP M. Ramadass has welcomed the sanction of Rs. 184 crores by the Union Cabinet's Economic Affairs Committee for upgrading facilities in the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) here. In a release, Mr. Ramadass, PMK's parliamentary party leader, said the schemes under the project included the construction of a 360-bed super speciality block and a trauma care centre. This would enable the institute to provide better medical care through 13 departments. There would be an increased intake for PG courses and research. JIPMER would emerge as a centre of excellence in patient care. He thanked Union Health Minister R. Anbumani and PMK founder S. Ramadoss for their sustained efforts in bringing about the facilities. This approach on the part of the Cabinet Committee confirmed that the Central Ministers hailing from Tamil Nadu were paying close attention to the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, Mr. Ramadass said.
CPI(M) claims credit
Pondicherry CPI(M) unit chief T. Murugan, who is also the convener of the People's Action Committee, formed to protest the Centre's move to convert JIPMER into an autonomous institution, said the plan to upgrade JIPMER's facilities was the culmination of the sustained stir of the committee. In a release on Saturday, he said the Centre should withdraw its proposal to convert JIPMER into an autonomous body, as any change in the status of the institute would dislocate medical services.
