Maharashtra wins overall title

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Maharashtra dethroned Karnataka to win the overall title in swimming as curtains came down on the 22nd National sub-junior aquatic championships at the Water Works Swimming pool here on Sunday.

Maharashtra swept all the eight gold medals on offer on the final day to finish with 337 points. Karnataka came a distant second with 245 points, while Tamil Nadu was third with 143 points.

In diving, Maharashtra retained the title with 159 points followed by Karnataka (38 points).

Maharashtra's Yudhisthir Jaisingh and Surabhi Tipre, who set two records each, hogged the limelight on the final day. Yudhisthir set new marks in 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke in the boys' group IV section, while Surabhi Tipre broke the existing marks in 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle in the girls' group III category. Both of them were declared as the best swimmers in boys' and girls' section respectively.

Kavya Bhadekar of Maharashtra (50m backstroke, girls' IV) and Priyanka Lalwani of Maharashtra (100m freestyle girls' IV) were the other two who entered the records books on Sunday.

The results: Aquatics: Boys: Group III: 100m freestyle: 1. Ajinkya Walimbe (Mah), 2. E.Rabikumar (Man), 3. K.S.Amalnath (Ker), (1:05.28); 100m backstroke: 1. Ajinkya Walimbe (Mah), 2. Gaurav Verliani (Mah), 3. Gopi Nath Kayal (Ben), (1:13.63). Group IV: 100m freestyle: 1. Yudhisthir Jaisingh (Mah), 2. N. Venkateswaran (TN), 3. S.S. Visakh (Ker), (1:07.27: NMR; OR: 1:08.03, Yudhisthir Jaisingh, 2005); 50m backstroke: 1. Yudhisthir Jaisingh (Mah), 2. Subhadip Das (Ben), 3. Yash Joshi (Mah), (0:35.67: NMR; OR: 0:36.64, Saurabh Sanvekar, 2004).

Girls: Group III: 100m freestyle: 1. Subrabhi Tipre (Mah), 2. M.M. Venpa (TN), 3. Kalyani Basu (Mah), (1:06.17: NMR; OR: 1:07.48, B. Neeraja, 2003); 100m backstroke: 1. Surabhi Tipre (Mah), 2. V.Vaibhavi (Kar), 3. B. Nischala (Kar), (1:14.89: NMR; OR: 1:17.30, Fariha Zaman, 2003).

Group IV: 100m freestyle: 1. Priyanka Lalwani (Mah), 2. Ruhab Khan (Del), 3. Gauri Deasi (Mah), (1:12.28: NMR; OR: 1:13.43, Kalyani Basu, 2003); 50m backstroke: 1. Kavya Bhandekar (Mah), 2. Antara Biswas (Ben), 3. R.C. Sanskruthi (Kar), (0:38.15: NMR; OR: 0:38.79, Kavya Bhandekar, 2005).

Diving (3m spring board): Boys (group I): 1. Swaraj Patil (Mah), 2. T. Hariprasad (Kar), 3. Shashank Phadke (Mah), (406.05 pts). Group II: 1. Krishna M. Naik (Mah), 2. Mohnish J. Patel (Mah), 3. Rahul Soman (Goa), (280.65).
