Machinery to protect sandal forest THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A division, range and four forest stations have been created in the Forest Department for protecting sandal trees in the Marayoor forest area. Marayoor will be the headquarters of the division and the Marayoor range will come under it. The Marayoor and Kanthalloor forest stations will be retained. The new range will come up at Kanthalloor and two of the new stations at Nachivayal and Vananthurai. The two other new stations would be set up at Karimutti, which comes under the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in Munnar Wildlife Division, and Chattamunnar, which comes under the Eravikulam National Park. Some 70 posts in various categories have also been created for the new machinery. Six of them will be filled through redeployment. — Special Correspondent

Man detained on impersonation charge

NEDUMBASSERY: Emigration officials at the Nedumbassery airport on Sunday detained a passenger following his deportation by the United Kingdom authorities on charges of impersonation. Lakshman Suresh (27), a resident of Tiruchi in Tamil Nadu district, was detained when he arrived here by an Air-India flight. According to Emigration officials, he had gone to London on the passport of one Akbar Abdul Rahuman of Kambam. He had gone to London via Doha from Kochi on April 22. He informed the Emigration officials at London that he had come seeking asylum as Sri Lankan refugee. However, on further questioning, the Emigration officials learnt about his nationality following which he was kept in custody till his deportation. He was later handed over to Chengamanad police. — A Correspondent

Meenakshi Thampan re-elected

Palakkad: Former CPI MLA Meenakshi Thampan was on Sunday re-elected as president of the Kerala Mahila Sanghom. Kamala Sadanandan was elected as secretary by the Mahila Sabhoam's State conference which concluded here. A resolution adopted by the meet expressed serious concern over increasing atrocities on women in the State and charged the UDF Government with being inactive to tackle the issue. — PTI

UDF policies ruining local bodies: Paloli

Thrissur: Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener Paloli Mohammed Kutty has alleged that the "wrong and ineffective policies" of the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government have wrecked the Local Self-Government Institutions.

Inaugurating the 37th State conference of the Kerala Panchayat Employees Association here on Saturday, Mr. Mohammed Kutty said that legal tangles and paucity of staff were the major problems faced by self-governing institutions.

The LDF convener said that the people of the State had given their verdict against the UDF Government in the Azhikode and Koothuparambu by-elections and the Lok Sabha elections. — Staff Reporter

MBBS course allotment

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: When the allotment of 400 seats for all-India pre-medical and pre-dental courses was completed in the first phase, as many as 25 students from Kerala have been selected for admission to MBBS in various medical colleges.

The following is the all-India rank and colleges where they have got allotment. JIPMER: 43, 58, Thiruvananthapuram: 109, 142, 148, 158, 237, 278, 305, 320, 341 and 350. Kottayam: 271, 286, 327, 333, 370 and 371. Madras: 115, 147, 199 and 372. Bangalore: 388 and Kozhikode: 146, 400.

Those who have not furnished the CBSE rank letter and the AISSCE/ISC pass certificate of twelfth standard should send it to Krishna Chandran, liaison officer at Kerala House, 3 Jantar Mantar Road, New Delhi - 001 at the earliest, a release issued by the Entrance Examinations Commissionerate said.

Tantric acharya laid to rest

KOZHIKODE: The body of Parabhattaraka Sri Ananganandanatha Padatheerthar (Dr. S. Vijayan), tantric acharya and founder of Vaithiri Srinatha Ashram in Wayanad district, was laid to rest at Ashram premises near Kalpetta on Saturday. The swami died at a hospital in Coimbatore on Friday. He was 65. The Swami was the eleventh in the chain of disciples of Bhaskara Rayamakhi. — Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala chapter of Transparency International- India (TIIK) has expressed concern over the decision of the State Government to initiate disciplinary action against the Director of Vigilance and Anti-corruption Bureau, Upendra Verma, for the observations he made recently at an interaction with the media. — Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Patients' Welfare Association has asked the authorities concerned to create adequate posts of doctors, nurses and other clinical staff in the Government hospitals, for the benefit of the economically weaker sections in society. Despite the fact that the number of patients visiting the Government hospitals has been steadily on the rise, adequate facilities did not exist in most of them, said K.S.Ambikumar, the State president of the Association. — Staff Reporter
