THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Congress (Jacob) leader T.M. Jacob said on Sunday that the Government had failed to address the crisis in the agriculture sector. He warned the Government that farmers would launch an agitation if their problems were not solved. The Kerala Congress leader said the Government had abandoned procurement of paddy and pepper midway. The procurement of arecanut had been suspended while the promise to procure vanilla, coffee and pineapple was not kept. Mr. Jacob said many agencies procuring paddy, including those that had registered with the State Civil Supplies Corporation before May 3, had been left out from the purchase scheme of the Corporation. He demanded that the Rs.106 crores that was sanctioned by the Centre for revival of paddy cultivation, be used to solve the present crisis. The Government had spent only half of promised amount of Rs. 10 crores for arecanut procurement, he alleged.
