THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has urged the Government to take steps to end the workers' agitations in the cashew and plantation sectors. In a statement here on Sunday, Mr. Vijayan accused the Government of having abetted the exploitation of workers in the two sectors by the employers and attributed the continuation of the agitations to this policy of the Government. He pointed out that cashew workers were on fast before 600 cashew factories seeking benefits due to them and that plantation workers were on strike for a week now to press their demand. Mr. Vijayan said the concessions announced by the Government for the plantation sector had benefited only the employers. The workers had launched the strike only after a conciliation conference, attended by the Chief Minister himself, failed to produce any result. The employers had adopted a stubborn stand on the demands raised by the workers and the Government had done nothing to break the stalemate, he added.
