No question of separate Mumbai state, says Bal Thackeray

MUMBAI: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray has said that he would `crush' anyone who speaks about a separate state of Mumbai.

``I will crush them. I will crush that tongue...and the head,'' Mr. Thackeray said in the concluding part of his interview in the party mouthpiece Saamna on Sunday.

``Let it be anyone. I will not care,'' he said when it was pointed out Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had recently made remarks on the issue.

``What Sena leader Raj Thackeray said about first separating Chennai from Tamil Nadu before contemplating any move regarding Mumbai, is right,'' Mr. Thackeray said.

On carving out Uttaranchal from Uttar Pradesh, the Sena chief said the people should have asked the question then. Mr. Thackeray reiterated that the party was not against those coming from other parts of the country to Mumbai.

Addressing a conference here last month, Mr. Chidambaram had said metropolitan cities such as Delhi and Mumbai need authority with sovereign character for better governance. — PTI
