HELPING HAND: Kollam Bishop Stanley Roman blessing the fishing boats before gifting them to tsunami victims in Kollam on Sunday.
KOLLAM: In association with the Quilon Social Service Society (QSSS), the Helpage India on Sunday distributed ten outboard engine-equipped traditional fishing boats and nets to those who lost their means of livelihood in the tsunami. Kollam Bishop Stanley Roman blessed the fishing boats and handed them over to the beneficiaries at a function at Vady.
50 fishermen benefit
Each boat and net, costing Rs. 2.40 lakhs, is for a group comprising five fishermen. Fifty fishermen benefited from the welfare programme The boats are made of marine plywood. The beneficiaries include those from Alapad and Arattupuzha. Project officer of Helpage India Ajit Chacko said that the boats and nets were distributed as part of the organisation's rehabilitation activity in tsunami-hit areas in association with the QSSS. The rehabilitation programmes comprise pension for the aged destitute, repair of damaged houses and income-generation programmes, Mr. Chacko said.
