CHENNAI: Differences in the Congress over the choice of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee members have come to the fore with the Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industries, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, and his supporters planning to hold a rally in Chennai next month as a show of strength. Mr. Elangovan told reporters here on Sunday that genuine Congressmen, who worked for the party for several years, had been given a raw deal. Posts were given to persons who had nothing to do with the organisation. "This is the handiwork of some vested interests, bad elements and persons who are in no way connected to the Congress." Against this backdrop, sincere party activists offered to quit their party posts. He persuaded them not to do so as he had taken up the issue with the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, who assured him that the All-India Congress Committee general secretary, Oscar Fernandes, would look into the issue. "I wish to make it clear that we will not cause embarrassment to Ms. Gandhi on this count. Even if party posts are not given to us, we will continue to strengthen her hands," he said. The South Chennai District Congress Committee and genuine party loyalists would organise a rally in Chennai on July 15 to mark the birth anniversary of K. Kamaraj and the birth centenary of Lal Bahadur Shastri.
