BHOPAL: The State Bank of India (SBI) registered a profit of Rs. 504 crores in the Bhopal division during the financial year 2004-2005. The bank's profit in the previous fiscal was Rs. 351 crores. This was announced by the Chief General Manager of SBI-Bhopal Division, S. Bhattacharya, at a press conference here on Saturday. He said that the deposits in the SBI-Bhopal Division covering Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh were touching Rs. 16914 crores against the advances of Rs. 9254 crores. 54.71 per cent of the total deposits had been utilised within Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, he said, adding that out of this amount, Rs. 3693 crores had been utilised in the primary sector. SBI has 48 lakh depositors and the number of persons who have availed the loan facility in the Bhopal division is 8.11 lakh, he went on to inform. SBI has focused attention on housing loans, car loans and personal loans to enlarge its portfolio, Mr. Bhattacharya said. He informed newspersons that the SBI-Bhopal division's housing loan portfolio stood at Rs. 227 crores in March 2001 but in the last four-year period it had increased to Rs. 1326 crores. The bank has also pushed forward its Education loan and SBI Scholarship Scheme to fulfill its role towards the youth and college students, he pointed out.
Kisan cards
For the sake of developing agriculture and other linked activities, the SBI-Bhopal division distributed Rs. 1563 crores during the last fiscal, said Mr. Bhattacharya. In 2004-2005, 64255 credit cards and 3436 Kisan Gold Cards were issued to farmers, he said, adding that till now 1.50 lakh farmers have been issued credit cards in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Besides, the bank also went out of its way and gave small loans totaling Rs. 1377 lakh to finance the activities of 10299 Self-help Groups. Mr. Bhattacharya said that the volume of loans extended by SBI-Bhopal division to the small-scale industry and the trade sector was now touching Rs. 3942 crores.
