Congress seeks dismissal of Raje Govt.

PCC delegation calls on Governor; submits memorandum listing demands

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee on Sunday sought the dismissal of the Bharatiya Janata Party Government in the State for the police excesses and on account of the break down in the law and order situation here. A high level delegation of the Coordination Committee of the PCC, which called on Governor Pratibha Patil, said the party was left with no other option than asking the Centre to exercise its powers under Article 356 of the Constitution to dismiss the Government.

PCC president B.D.Kalla who led the delegation which had former Chief Ministers Shiv Charan Mathur and Jagannath Pahadia as members, told the Governor that the State Government, which came to power 18 months back, had used brute police force against the people as many times. There was an increase of 7 percent in the overall crime which included murders, dacoities, rapes and looting, besides several instances of communal violence, he said.

With the Congress too joining the demand, almost all the Opposition parties in Rajasthan, including the Left parties, which form part of the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre, have sought the dismissal of the State Government in the wake of the latest police action -- firing on farmers in Tonk on June 13, which led to the death of five persons.

Addressing newspersons at the PCC office, Mr.Kalla said in the past one-and-a-half year the police had opened fire eight times on farmers and other innocent people killing 14 persons. "This kind of response from the State Government to the genuine demands of the public like water have exposed its insensitivity and irresponsibility to the people's problems,'' Mr.Kalla charged.

The farmers were agitated over water for drinking and irrigation all over the State but the Government did not even had got prepared a contingency plan or water policy for the summer days, Mr.Kalla said.

The PCC chief said the discontentment among the farmers in Tonk district was fomented by the Ministers in the State Government and Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje herself, who had given them false promises of making available the water from Bisalpur dam during the election campaign.
