A quiet celebration for Mammootty

Staff Reporter

"I have become richer in experience," says Mammootty

KOCHI: It was a quiet celebration of his silver jubilee in filmdom for the actor Mammootty, along with his women fans, on Sunday.

The event, organised by a women's magazine in Malayalam, was a platform for interaction for the fans and the superstar, who continues to regale cine-goers with his performances despite Malayalam cinema facing a crisis and the emergence of new faces on the scene. Answering questions, Mammootty talked about his films, his roles and women in general, but was non-committal on posers on his future plans.

Engaged in light banter with the 25 women, who had come from various parts of the State, Mammootty said, amid the light talk, that acting as such had been the greatest influence in his life. It was the urge to act like the heroes of his younger days, MGR, Prem Nazir and others, that made him enter this field.

When the women wanted to know if he saw someone among the new actors to take his place, he said that in the film industry one had to create a space himself. "I did not take anybody's place. I just found a chair for myself."

Comedy roles had not come his way earlier, because the media had written about his inability to do lighter roles even before giving him a chance, he said. "I was always associated with serious roles." Thommanum Makkalum seemed to have proved otherwise, he added.

Asked about the changes in the films and his acting in the last 10 years, he said that he had become richer in experience. When the women wanted to know whether his son would join the film industry, Mammootty said that, as of now, he had not shown any interest in joining the industry.
