KOCHI: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has called upon the livestock-feed manufacturing industry to ensure sufficient supply of quality compound cattle-feed at affordable prices. Mr. Chandy was inaugurating the sixth national-level seminar for popularising oil-meal usage in compound cattle, poultry and aqua feeds, organised here on Sunday by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India. The Chief Minister said the dairy industry in the State was on the growth path and that compound animal feed, especially based on coconut, would have a great demand. Use of compound cattle feed could go up from the present six-lakh tonnes a year to at least 15-lakh tonnes in the near future. Mr. Chandy said that with lifestyle changes, consumption of milk and milk-based products would go up. Through intense promotional methods, cattle feed use could be increased, he added. Anand Menon, convenor of the seminar, who welcomed the gathering, called upon the State Government to set up a veterinary university in the State. D.P. Khandelia, president of the association, provided a perspective of the seminar. P.M.A. Hakeem, Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, said animals played a big role in reducing rural poverty, but expressed concern over the low productivity of Indian livestock. He said the fight against foot-and-mouth disease in the country had gained some success, but no vaccine had been developed to prevent the disease. An attempt was now being made to create disease-free zones. Agriculture Production Commissioner Mathew C. Kunnumkal pointed to the shortage of green and dry fodder in the State and how compound feed would help tackle the situation. Virgil Miedema, Regional Director, American Soybean Society, proposed a vote of thanks. Speakers at the technical sessions included Nirja Rajkumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture; P.G. Phalke, Cattle and Livestock Feed Manufacturers' Association; M.J. Saxena, Managing Director, Ayurvet Ltd.; and Robert Swick of the American Soybean Association.
