Thiruvananthapuram
Bus shelters and stops Bus shelters have been erected in various parts of the city for the convenience of the travelling public. But the buses stop neither in front of the shelters nor at the assigned bus stops, forcing the commuters to run in between the buses to board them. The commuters also appear to be reluctant to even step into the bus shelters or to stand near the bus stops. Bus bays at Vazhuthacaud and DPI Junction are heavily crowded, particularly during peak hours. Buses plying from Vazhuthacaud towards Jagathy, prefer to stop near the junctions forcing the commuters to wait for buses here. This means that the bus shelter at Vazhuthacaud and the bus stop in front of the apartment complexes near DPI junction are seldom used. The transport authorities should issue strict instruction to the KSRTC and private bus drivers asking them to stop the buses in front of bus shelters and bus stops in order to ease the traffic congestion at junctions. K. Ramachandra Panicker Thiruvananthapuram Parking problems New houses and flats should have sufficient car parking facilities. Separate car parking facilities are necessary in all villages and towns. Position of electric posts, transformers and telephone poles should be shifted away from the roadside. The Government's efforts to widen lanes and roads leading to main bus stands and railway stations in the cities should be appreciated. These programmes should be extended to all towns and villages too. Two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws should not be allowed to park on roadsides in narrow roads in all places. Sufficient `Pay and Park' facilities should be opened in all cities, towns and villages also. Pressure should be brought on the Government to materialise immediately the plan of State highways. N. Subramonian Potty Alappuzha Busy junction Of late, the vehicular traffic in the Collectorate junction/Uppidamoodu bridge in Vanchiyoor/Kaithamukku has increased so much that it cannot be controlled by one or two personnel from the traffic police. Six roads are meeting here and zebra lines are not provided on these roads. In such a situation, pedestrians, especially the elderly and women, experience great difficulty in crossing these roads. I suggest that the authorities concerned should instal automatic signalling systems on these roads immediately.
