Concern over action against director

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala chapter of Transparency International- India (TIIK) has expressed concern over the decision of the State Government to initiate disciplinary action against the Director of Vigilance and Anti-corruption Bureau, Upendra Verma, for the observations he made recently at an interaction with the media. It was in answer to questions from media persons that Mr.Verma stated about the Department of Revenue leading in corruption cases being investigated by the Bureau and the Kerala State Electricity Board failing to make available all the files needed to further probe the deal the previous LDF Government had negotiated with the Canadian company, SNC Lavalin, according to Babu Bhaskar, the Vice-chairman of the TIIK. Action against the head of the department for disclosing factual information runs counter to the Government's claim that it was committed to transparency in the administration, especially so, when the information was already in the public domain, Mr. Babu Bhaskar said. — Staff Reporter

Secretariat march planned

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The RYF-B has accused the State Government of having failed in rehabilitating the victims of the tsunami tragedy. The affected people were still languishing in temporary camps under miserable conditions. Even the final list of beneficiaries of the housing scheme meant for the victims has not been prepared. The extent of loss of fishing paraphernalia was yet to be ascertained and due compensation awarded to the affected people. In protest against the apathy of the Government towards the tsunami victims, the RYF State committee has resolved to stage a march to the Secretariat on July 4.— Staff Reporter

Demand

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Patients' Welfare Association has asked the authorities concerned to create adequate posts of doctors, nurses and other clinical staff in the Government hospitals, for the benefit of the economically weaker sections in society. Despite the fact that the number of patients visiting the Government hospitals has been steadily on the rise, adequate facilities did not exist in most of them, said K.S.Ambikumar, the State president of the Association.— Staff Reporter
