NEW DELHI: Underlining the need for redefining laws on minors, experts have suggested an amendment to the law to enhance the age of innocence from seven to 12 years to prevent children from undergoing the ordeal of trial by courts. "The age of innocence under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000 should be increased from seven years to 12 as a child develops the ability of abstract thinking at that age," they said at a three-day discussion here. Participants expressed anguish over media reporting of child abuse cases, saying press should always keep in mind the law on juvenile which makes it mandatory not to disclose the identity of the victim as well as the offender. -- PTI
