Poor turnout at seminar in Belgaum

Staff Correspondent

BELGAUM: The seminar on "Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act & Prevention of Female Foeticide," held here on Sunday, was in tune with the objective of bringing down the menace of female foeticide in this part of the world. But, if the turnout was any indication, there is an apparent lack of seriousness among the stakeholders, particularly the doctors who can play a decisive role in this avowed campaign against female foeticide.

Poor participation

The seminar was organised jointly by the District Administration and the Belgaum branches of Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Indian Red Cross Society, Indian Medical Association, District Health & Family Welfare Office, Department of Women & Child Development, Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecological Society of Belgaum and `Parivartan', a voluntary organisation.

The main objective of the seminar was to sensitize the doctors and law enforcing authorities on the seriousness of the issue, but the representation from the medical community was unsatisfactory, as also from the Police Department.

The Deputy Commissioner, M. Maheswar Rao, inaugurated the programme. The district President of FPAI, Suresh Kulkarni spoke on the role of FPAI in sensitizing different sections of the society on the need to prevent female foeticide.

Campaign

Sabu George, who is leading the campaign on female foeticide in different parts of the country, spoke on the issue elaborately and indicated the seriousness of the problem in the country.

The Vice-President of FPAI, Belgaum branch, S.K.Bhat, who delivered the welcome speech, wanted the participants to pledge that they would do their best in preventing female foeticide.
