TUMKUR: Over 300 people were taken ill after having food at a wedding reception at Bagawala Gollarahatti village in Tiptur taluk of Tumkur district on Monday. Nearly 500 people had food at the function. V. Dr. Cheluvaraj suspected that use of contamination water might the reason for the people falling sick. Samples of the food that was consumed could not be taken, but the water had been collected and sent to a laboratory in Bangalore, he said. B. Nanjamari, Tiptur MLA, who visited the hospital, said fresh cases kept coming in till late afternoon. Quoting the affected persons he said that they developed nausea after returning to their villages in the taluk. The bride, bridegroom and the head cook, are among those admitted to the hospital. H.A. Rame Gowda, medical officer at the hospital, said the number of the persons admitted to the hospital has risen to 80. "About 20 of them who are feeling better will be discharged," he said. People complained about the absence of a woman doctor at the hospital. But Dr. Cheluvaraj brushed it aside saying it is not a problem. "We have rushed more doctors, nurses and medicines to Tiptur Hospital." He said chlorination of the drinking water supplied to villages in the taluk and general health education have been taken up as a precautionary measure.
