Letters to the Editor
By giving 5 per cent reservation to Muslims in education and employment, the Andhra Pradesh Government has opened a Pandora's box. There already exists a plethora of reservation that has compartmentalised Indian society. On the one hand, politicians express concern at divisions in the name of caste and religion and, on the other, perpetrate differences based on caste and community. How much longer do people have to suffer such jugglery for vote bank considerations?
B. Madhava Murthy,
* * * I fail to understand why such a hue and cry is being raised over 5 per cent reservation to Muslims when backward Hindus enjoy 27 per cent reservation. The Andhra Pradesh Government has set right the anomaly, which discriminates against Muslims on religious ground. As per the existing reservation system, a person belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes loses all the benefits of reservation if he embraces Islam. Thanks to the backwardness of Muslims, such rules continue to remain unchallenged even after 58 years of independence.
