Team reviews facilities at hospital in Dharwad

    DHARWAD: A team of amicus curie constituted by the Karnataka High Court went around the Karnataka Institute of Mental Health (KIMH) here on Saturday to find out whether the directions of the Supreme Court are being carried out.

    The team comprising Pradip Sawkar, Ashwath Narayan, Nagaratna, Laila Ollapalli, Shalini, the Joint Director, Department of Health, Bangalore, Chandrasekhar, and others visited the new premises to which the hospital has been shifted.

    Later, the team held a meeting with the officials concerned and listened to suggestions to improve the facilities at the hospital. The team was told that the new premises has a bed strength of 160 with facilities for attendants of patients to stay and 20 emergency treatment rooms and 12 special rooms.

    A three-phase programme for the development of the hospital is underway with work on the first phase having been completed. In the second phase, it is planned to construct 24 special rooms and quarters for teachers and others. Work will commence only if funds are released, the team was told.

    No teachers

    At present, the hospital has no teachers but only six doctors. It was only last year that the State Government sanctioned 65 posts, including that of six health officers and four psychiatrists. Efforts are on to recruit them soon.

    The team was told that there is a need to start MD and DPM courses.
