Funds for roads in tsunami-hit areas

P. Chidambaram, R. Velu provide cash from Local Area Development funds Twenty-eight MPs across the country have granted funds for the construction of old age homes, bridges.

CUDDALORE: Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu have sanctioned Rs. 10 lakhs and Rs. 11 lakhs respectively from the MPs Local Area Development Funds (MPLAD) for road work in the tsunami-affected Chithiraipettai and Rasapettai hamlets in Cuddalore.

MPs' visit

This follows the visit of the MPs panel recently. Twenty-eight MPs in the country have sanctioned Rs. 2.88 crores from the MPLAD funds for the setting up of two old age homes, one at Cuddalore and another at Parangipettai; the construction of a bridge at Thevanampattinam; and improving the Rasampettai-Kudikadu road.

The allocation from the Tamil Nadu MPs is as follows: K. Subbarayan (Coimbatore) - Rs. 11 lakhs, S.K. Karvendhan (Pazhani) - Rs. 10 lakhs, J.M. Haroon Raseek (Periyakulam) - Rs. 10 lakhs, K.M. Khader Mohideen (Vellore) - Rs. 15 lakhs and K.V. Thangabalu (Salem) - Rs. 5 lakhs.

Six MPs from Uttar Pradesh have earmarked Rs. 55 lakhs, and 15 MPs from West Bengal, including Pranab Mukherjee from Jangpur have provided Rs. 1.61 crores. The work would be taken up soon, according to a statement from Gagandeep Singh Bedi, District Collector.

Estimates for the construction of bridges at Sothikuppam, Rasapettai and Thazhanguda have been sent to the Asian Development Bank and World Bank.

State's outlay

The statement said the Tamil Nadu Government had earmarked Rs. 18 crores to repair the tsunami-damaged roads in the district. These would include the Cuddalore-Chittoor road (Rs. 1.50 crores), Vriddhachalam-Parangipettai road (Rs. 1.50 crores), Killai road (Rs. 2.35 crores), Puduchathiram-Parangipettai road (Rs. 80 lakhs), Chidambaram-T.S. Pet road (Rs. 1.56 crores) and the Annappanpet-Madavapallam-Kumarapet road (Rs. 6 lakhs).
