ERODE: A demand to upgrade Periyasemur Government Middle School into a high school was made through a memorandum on Monday. S. Kannan, leader of the United Communist Party of India, presenting the memorandum to the district Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said at present the Periyasemur students depended on the high schools at Manickkampalayam and Veerappanchatram trekking more than four km. of distance.
Poor families
Most of the residents in Periyasemur are poor and girls are hardly sent for higher education and forced to take up jobs. He also urged the Collector to instruct the Education Department or the Periyasemur administration to construct toilets in the Periyasemur middle school.
Proposal sought
He also urged the Collector to send a proposal for starting a Primary Health Centre at Periyasemur.
Special request
He made a special request to the Collector, stating that in Periyasemur a tapioca unit was working and effluents had contaminated ground water. The Collector also received over 300 petitions on Monday mostly related to grant of house site patta, old age pension and employment.
