Petrol, diesel prices in Chennai

CHENNAI: The price of diesel has been increased by Rs.2.21 and that of petrol by Rs.3.01 in the city. Diesel will cost Rs. 31.51 as against Rs. 29.30 earlier. Petrol will cost Rs. 44.26 as against Rs.41.25. — Special Correspondent

Alliance Air, IA schedules

CHENNAI: Alliance Air Boeing-737 flight (CD-7549) will leave Chennai at 5-45 a.m. on all days with effect from June 21 and reach Port Blair at 7-50 a.m. The return service (CD-7550) will leave Port Blair at 8-20 a.m. and arrive here at 10-25 a.m.

Consequently, the four days a week Boeing-737 service (CD-7478) on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays on the Chennai-Vishakapatnam-Raipur-Delhi sector will leave Chennai at 11-15 a.m. (instead of 1-20 p.m.), reach Vishakapatnam at 12-20 p.m., leave Vishakapatnam at 12-50 p.m., reach Raipur at 1-40 p.m., leave Raipur at 2-20 p.m. and reach Delhi at 3-50 p.m. However, there is no change in the timings of the return service (CD-7477) on the Delhi-Raipur-Vishakapatnam -Chennai sector, which will arrive Chennai at 3-50 p.m.

According to an IA release, due to operational reasons till July 1, the service (IC-571/572) on the Chennai-Mumbai-Chennai sector stands withdrawn. However, the other three services on the Chennai-Mumbai-Chennai sector will operate to the existing timings. — Special Correspondent

Counselling begins

THANJAVUR: Counselling for admission to B.Tech courses of the Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy, Deemed University, for 2005-06 began here on Monday.

The first admission card was given to N. Vineeth of Hyderabad, by R. Balasubramanian, chairman and managing director, City Union Bank Ltd. Vice-chancellor, R. Sethuraman, said that SASTRA had been selecting candidates with Plus-two marks. The university received 7,000 applications this year for nearly 700 seats.

Counselling will be held on Tuesday and on June 23 and 24. S. Vaidyasubramanian, Dean; Kandaswamy, Registrar, and Swaminathan, Deputy Registrar, participated. — Staff Reporter

Ex-Minister's wife moves court

MADURAI: The wife of former Minister, Samayanallur Selvaraj, has moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court to discharge her from a corruption case pending against them.

In her revision petition, moved against the order of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (special judge), Madurai, declining to discharge her from the case, Ms. Pushpavalli claimed that a prime facie case was not made out against her and hence she could not have been charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Kumbhabishekam

CHENNAI: The kumbhabishekam of Mariamman Temple at Veppathur, eight km east of Kumbakonam, will be performed at 8-30 a.m. on June 24. The 100-year-old temple, which was in a dilapidated condition, has been reconstructed with support from those hailing from the village and others. The construction and kumbhabishekam' have been organised under the auspices of the Veppathur Sri Venkatachalapahty Trust with guidance from the Hindu Religious Charitable and Endowment. — Special Correspondent

Nabbed for stealing diesel

TUTICORIN: The police on Monday arrested a 49-year-old man who allegedly stole diesel kept at a stone quarry near here on Sunday.

The police said Abbavu, a native of Meignanapuram, stole five litres of diesel belonging to Ganesh. The fuel was kept inside a can in a stone quarry at Padmanabamangalam.

The Srivaikuntam police investigated the case and the stolen property was recovered.

Arrested

TUTICORIN: The police arrested a person in connection with the seizure of petrol from Puliampatti on Sunday.

The petrol seized was meant for sale without a proper licence.

Sources said Ramachandran was arrested on the charge of having petrol in his possession with the intention of selling it.

He was later remanded to custody, the sources added.

Arrested for gambling

TUTICORIN: The police conducted raids across the district on Sunday and arrested 16 persons on the charge of gambling and selling lottery tickets at various places.

The police said that while Murugan and 14 others were taken into custody from Pudukottai for gambling, a person named Murugesan was arrested with a bunch of Bhutan State lotteries at Nazareth.

Murugesan was remanded under Section 5 (1) (a) and 4 (a) of the Lottery Regulation Act while the others were remanded under the Tamilnadu Gambling Act.

Fish workers' demonstration

NAGERCOIL: Activists of the Tamil Nadu Fish Workers' Union held a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Monday to urge the Government to find an early solution to their 11-point charter of demands including the construction of a temporary bridge across Keela and Meela Manakudi, the renovation of Anantha Victoria Marthanda Varma Canal, non-implementation of the Sethusamudram project considering the welfare of the fishermen community etc.

The president of the union, T. Peter Dhas, led the agitation.

Dies in accident

NAGERCOIL: A 33-year-old man was killed on the spot in a road accident on Monday.

According to police sources, Parameswaran of Ganapathipuram near Nagercoil was proceeding towards Vadaserry on a motorcycle when an autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction dashed against his vehicle killing him on the spot.

The police have registered a case and are investigating it further.

Murdered

TUTICORIN: A 42-year-old man was murdered at Karikalam Colony on Monday morning.

The police said the killer stabbed Muthukumar with a knife and inflicted serious injuries on him.

He was immediately rushed to a hospital where he died.

The North police have taken one Jebaseelan into custody for questioning. — Staff Reporter.

CPM demo to highlight drinking water scarcity

KARUR: The CPI (M) staged a demonstration in front of the Taluk Office here on Monday to highlight the drinking water scarcity in the district following the release of polluted water from the Orathupalayam reservoir in Erode district.

Party volunteers raised slogans denouncing the State Government's lethargy in addressing a vital issue concerning the people.

They urged the State Government to ensure that the reservoir was used only for irrigation purposes, prevent effluents from flowing into the reservoir and save Cauvery and other drinking water sources.

The CPI (M) also wanted supply of protected potable water to areas in Karur, Inam Karur and Thanthoni Municipalities. — Staff Reporter

Ryots stage road roko for basic amenities

PERAMBALUR: As many as 61 farmers of Kunnam, near here, who attempted to resort to a `road roko' stir at the bus stand today, courted arrest.

The farmers, who were led by the district committee member of the Communist Party of India-led Farmers Association, Arumugam, demanded basic amenities such as road facility, pathway to burial ground, etc., in the village.
