MADURAI: Functioning of retail outlets of a private petroleum company and company-owned bunks of public sector petroleum companies fizzled out the one-day token strike called by the Federation of All India Petroleum Dealers in Madurai and Virudhunagar districts on Monday. All the over 100 bunks in Madurai and around 60 bunks in Virudhunagar district remained open, the police said. The strike was planned to stress the dealers' demand to fix their commission on percentage basis. "We are getting our commission for every litre of fuel sold and not on collection basis," K. Ramachandran, secretary, Madurai District Petroleum Dealers' Association, said. Besides, the dealers did not want mushrooming of new retail outlets without "real increase in sales potential," he added. The dealers, who had their pumps close to the company-owned bunks, were forced to start their operation after closing down for a few hours this morning. "No dealer wants to lose his customers. And this had a cascading effect on the other dealers too," Mr. Ramachandran said. V. Vijayakumar, Senior Divisional Retail Manager of Indian Oil Corporation, said that except for a handful of pumps in Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Mayiladuthurai, Theni and Kodaikannal, there was no report of closure of any of the IOC bunks in the 14 districts and Karaikal of Pondicherry in the Madurai division. The IOC has 300 pumps, including 18 company-owned ones, in the division. There was no panic among motorists and it was business as usual in all bunks.
