RAIN AT LAST: These youngsters were prepared for the drizzle.
CHENNAI: The city experienced a surprise spell of summer shower on Monday evening. The smell of wet earth though short-lived, brought back smiles. Weathermen forecast that the temperature will fall in the next few days. Chennaiites, however, had to make do with just a few drops. The dark clouds promised much but delivered little. The earth remained mostly dry. But in some places, roadsides turned into gutters. Pedestrians brought out umbrellas which had protected them from the scorching heat. The unstable atmosphere and breeze resulted in rain. For three days till Monday, there had been virtually no sea breeze.
Intense heat
The weather office said the thundercloud activity was because of the intense heat. Sea breeze usually sets in by 2 p.m. "Normally, in June the temperature is around 37 degree Celsius. This year, on many days it has been three degrees above normal," said a senior official of the Meteorological department. "If it rains well in Kerala and Karnataka, areas abutting the States will get good rain. In other parts of Tamil Nadu, it is only thunderstorm that will bring rain. Monday's storm has brought down the temperature because there is moisture in the air," the official said. In the next few days, the heat may not be as intense. The moisture in the atmosphere will cushion the impact of the strong rays. The 15-minute drizzle made the evening cooler.
