MYSORE: Members of the Mysore Nagara Palike Poura Karmikara Sangha launched an indefinite strike from Monday seeking that their demands be met. Following a weeklong dharna on the premises of the Mysore City Corporation (MCC), the pourakarmikas launched a strike seeking monetary compensation, pension and other benefits. They said that despite several appeals and memorandums to the State Government and the city corporation, their demands have not been met. The protesters said that since October 2001, the families of retired or dead pourakarmikas are facing problems as the disbursement of funds through the district treasury has been stopped. The protesters said that the retirement benefits given to pourakarmikas are meagre and must be increased. They also demanded that the privatisation of cleaning work should be scrapped as it is leading to the exploitation of workers by contractors. The protesters demanded that the pourakarmikas working for private contractors should be absorbed by the city corporation in accordance with the I.P.D. Salappa report. The pourakarmikas have also demanded basic housing facilities, payment of salaries on time, group provident fund facilities and the scrapping of the Cadre and Recruitment Rules.
