Non-workers make up 58 p.c. of population

District's average behind State's average for literacy

MYSORE: The Census 2001 released by the Directorate of Census Operations, Karnataka, has revealed interesting demographic details of Mysore district. The report contains data from the seven taluks in the district and provides information on sex ratio, density of population, literacy rate, and employment figures.

The report pegs the population of Mysore district at 26.41 lakhs as against the total population of 5.28 crores of Karnataka. While the State recorded a decennial population growth of 17.5 per cent, the district recorded a growth rate of 15.8 per cent. With respect to sex ratio and the literacy rate, the district is lagging behind the State average.

Literacy rate

T. Narasipura, which has a moderate literacy rate, recorded a decennial population growth rate of 8.1 per cent. However, Mysore taluk, which has the highest literacy rate recorded the highest decennial population growth rate of 21.5 per cent.

According to the data, the sex ratio (the number of females for every 1,000 males) in Mysore district is 964 as against the State average of 965. However, the sex ratio in the age group between zero and six years is 962: 1000 as against the State's figure of 946: 1000.

The literacy rate of the population above seven years is 63.5 per cent, in this respect the district is lagging behind the State average of 66.6 per cent. The male literacy rate is 70.9 per cent as against the State average of 76.1 per cent, while the female literacy rate is 55.8 per cent as against 56.9 per cent for the entire State.

Within the district, Mysore taluk has the highest literacy rate at 76.5 per cent as compared to Nanjangud taluk, which has recorded the lowest at 49.6 per cent.

The density of population in Mysore distict is 385 persons a sq km, which is higher than the State average of 276 persons per sq. km. However, Heggadadevana Kote taluk, which is the largest taluk in the district and has a vast area under forest cover, has recorded the lowest density of population in the district with 152 per cent per sq. km.

The census reveals that 37.2 per cent of the total population of Mysore district lives in urban centres as against the State average of 34 per cent.

Employment

Of the total population of the district, the percentage of non-workers (persons who were not engaged in any work during the reference period of the census) is 58 per cent as against the State average of 55.5 per cent. Main workers (workers who had worked for the major part of the reference period) comprised 35.1 per cent, and marginal workers (workers who had not worked for the major part of the reference period) were just over 7 per cent.

Of the total working population 35 per cent are cultivators, 22.5 per cent are agricultural labourers, 1.9 per cent are attached to household industries and 39.7 per cent of the population has been classified as "other workers".

The data also reveals that 17.7 per cent of the total population comprised Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes account for 10.3 per cent of the total population.

Other details available in the data are the number of towns and villages in the district. While Mysore district is dotted with 11 towns, which comprise an area of 6,854 sq. km. There are 1,340 villages in the district as against 29,406 villages in Karnataka.
