Expert cautions against lifestyle diseases

MYSORE: Cautioning people against lifestyle diseases, noted physician S.B. Vikram has emphasised the need to exercise every day and dietary control to keep heart ailments, blood pressure and diabetes at bay.

Speaking at a health check-up camp for journalists organised by Vikram Hospital and Heartcare Centre at the Mysore District Journalists' Association here on Sunday, Dr. Vikram said modern lifestyle ailments such as heart diseases, blood pressure and diabetes have become rampant among the present generation.

"No longer do you hear of people suffering or dying of tuberculosis. Heart ailments used to affect only aged people. Nowadays, they are commonly found even among youth in their thirties," he said attributing the increasing incidence of heart ailments to modern lifestyle.

In view of the growing incidence of lifestyle diseases, dietary prescriptions are being announced for children as young as five years, he said.

S. Bhaskar, chairman of Vikram hospital, noted cardiologist Arun Srinivas and several hospital staff participated in the programme.
