CHENNAI: The cash snatching case, in which three police personnel from Madurai were involved, has been transferred to the Central Crime Branch police. A senior officer said that since the case required investigation that had to be taken up outside the city limits, it was handed over to the Central Crime Branch. The Flower Bazaar police on June 7 arrested eight persons, including three police personnel from Madurai, who allegedly attempted to snatch away cash from employees of a jewellery shop. Police said the men in uniform from Madurai reportedly followed the employees of the jewellery shop in a jeep, after they came to know that they were carrying hefty sums of cash. Two of the policemen intercepted the jewellery shop employees on NSC Bose Road in the city, posing as personnel from the Crime Branch and asked them to handover the bag containing the cash to them. The employees raised an alarm and this caught the attention of a police patrolling team. The policemen from Madurai were identified as Paneerselvam, Meenakshisundaram and Baskar. The police also seized the vehicle used by the gang.
Rice dealer held
The Red Hills police arrested Babu Naidu, a rice dealer, on Sunday for allegedly cheating paddy merchants of Rs. 15 lakhs. According to the police, Mr. Naidu did not pay the full amount to the merchants for the rice he bought from them. A case under Section 420 (cheating) was registered against Mr. Naidu, who was remanded to judicial custody on Monday.
