CHENNAI: The importance of segregation of waste at source and the necessity to recycle it for use as compost was emphasised by speakers at an awareness campaign on solid waste management. It was organised under the auspices of Kottur Gardens Residents Association and Mrs. Sitalakshmi Raghavan Memorial Social and Charitable Trust. The meeting was organised as part of the National Environmental Awareness Campaign and Ministry of Environment and Forests at the ABC Playgrounds, Kottur Gardens, on Sunday. Sekhar Raghavan, trustee, Mrs. Sitalakshmi Raghavan Memorial Trust, said waste bins would be distributed through the Trust. Venugopal, Assistant Commissioner, Chennai Corporation, Zone IX, said the campaign for waste segregation at homes had picked up. He detailed the eco-projects taken up by the Corporation in Kottur.
Sorting at source
Mangalam Balasubramanian, president, Exnora Green Pammal, elaborated the process involved in the segregation of solid waste at source. She urged self-help groups to take up the scheme as it provided scope for employment to women and youth. Indukanth Ragade, vice- chairman, Alacrity Foundations, spoke on the importance of wastewater management in households. He described plastic waste as a menace that threatened to undo all the good work done in the environmental front by the government and other private agencies.
