"Car festival should pave way for realignment"

Special Correspondent

Puthiya Tamizhagam appeal to mainstream political parties

CHENNAI.: The Puthiya Tamizhagam (PT) president, K.Krishnasamy, appealed to the mainstream political parties, including the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) to extend their support for the successful conduct of the Kandadevi temple car festival in Sivaganga district on June 21.

He told reporters here that political parties taking a principled stand on issues related to empowerment of Dalits would pave the way for a realignment on the basis of ideology, he said. "Let the political realignment start from the Kandadevi festival."

Referring to the High Court's order directing the Sivaganga Collector to ensure the full participation of Dalits in the car-pulling ceremony of the Swarnamootheeswarar temple, he said the district administration should take all necessary security measures.

Making it clear that he would participate in the festival, Dr.Krishnasamy said the mainstream political parties such as the AIADMK, DMK, Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party should not keep away from the issue. He also appealed to the State secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist, N.Varadarajan, and Central Executive Committee member of the Communist Party of India, R.Nallakannu, to take part in the festival, treating the issue as one involving human rights.

On the High Court's order flaying discriminatory practices against the Dalits, he said the previous DMK Government had admitted that the two-tumbler system was in vogue in as many as 2000 villages in the State. The Government should take effective measures through the Home Secretary to eliminate such practices, he said.
