CHENNAI: The defamation case against the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, for his reported comments attributing motive to the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, has been posted to August 18 for issuance of summons. The VII Additional Sessions Judge, K. Jayabalan, adjourned the matter to August 18, after the Principal Sessions Judge, P. Murugesan, referred it to the court on June 13. According to the prosecution, Mr. Karunanidhi had condemned the State Government for its "delayed arrest of the Sankaracharya" and "attributed sinister motive to the Chief Minister" in the matter. It was reported in many dailies, five of which were cited as witnesses. The Judge also adjourned the defamation complaint against columnist S. Gurumurthy to August 18. As regards the assault case against the DMK youth wing leader, M.K. Stalin, the Judge adjourned the matter to July 21.
