CHENNAI: With the launch of the Sri Ramachandra Cholayil Sanjeevanam ayurvedic centre at the Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre here on Monday, patients at the SRMC can now look for a more holistic healing experience. Inaugurating the centre, Dr. T.K. Parthasarathy, pro-chancellor, Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, said the treatment offered would supplement allopathic treatment at an affordable cost.
Follow-up treatment
The services offered by the centre would not be in conflict with the allopathic treatment offered by the hospital, but would be a follow-up, he said. Ayurveda was effective in helping patients cope with stress, Dr. S. Thanikachalam, chairman, Cardiac Care Centre, SRMC, said. Indian systems of medicine placed more emphasis on prevention of ailments. A proposal to offer an abridged six-month course in ayurveda as an optional subject during the university's final-year M.B.B.S programme was under consideration. Simultaneous research in ayurveda would be promoted and a taxonomical study done on traditional medicinal herbs, he said. The new centre would also offer treatment in magneto therapy, electrotherapy, acupressure, reflexology, acupuncture and physiotherapy, Dr. V.P. Sidhan, chairman, Cholayil Group of Companies, said. Ayurvedic therapies offered included pizhichal, shirodhara, panchakarma, njavarakizhi, netratharpanam, shirovasthi, udvarthanam and abhyangam, apart from naturopathic treatments like hydro, mud, diet and massage therapies. The centre would be run by a team of five doctors, including one resident doctor and can treat 15 patients at a time. Radha Venkatachalam, chief executive director, Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre, was also present during the launch.
