MADURAI: Various political parties and trade unions on Monday urged the State Government to take action against aided schools that were collecting donations and capitation fee from students at the time of admission. They made an appeal to the Government to fix a prescribed fee for aided schools and colleges to prevent the institutions from collecting more money from parents. Representatives from the Janata Dal (Secular), Marumalarchi Labour Front Weavers' Association, CITU, and the All India Trade Union Congress staged a demonstration at Sellur on Monday condemning the `extra collections' made in aided schools. They made a plea to the Collector and the Chief Educational Officer to take immediate steps in the interest of parents and students. They objected to the manner in which excess fee was collected for notebooks, uniform and textbooks "when actually the Government had announced distribution of free textbooks for all students in aided schools." Political parties pointed out that in some aided schools Rs.1,500 to Rs.6,000 was taken from parents as admission fee and a sum of up to Rs.1,060 for notebooks. The protestors objected to admitting more students in schools and asked for immediate steps to prevent any Kumbakonam-type tragedy.
