MADURAI: Tension prevailed on the Collectorate premises here on Monday after a handful of women threatened to commit suicide. Police intervened and snatched the kerosene cans from the agitators and took them into custody. According to police sources, Katturaja alias Muthuramalingam of Kamarajapuram was arrested this morning in connection with the murder of the Arasaramaram Pillayar Temple priest recently. A group of people led by family members of the accused gathered at the Collectorate and blocked the Collector's car. They demanded the immediate release of Katturaja. When a posse of police personnel led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Town), N. Manivannan, tried to intervene, a few women carrying kerosene cans threatened to commit self-immolation. However, women police constables prevented them from doing it. Twenty-one persons, including 17 women, were arrested on charges of "unlawful assembly," "attempt to commit suicide" and violation of prohibitory orders under the City Police Act. They were remanded in judicial custody.
