MADURAI: Thirty-four agricultural labourers, including seven women, belonging to the Communist Party of India were arrested on Monday for trying to stage a dharna, demanding the implementation of the Kolappan Committee recommendations. The protestors, led by the district secretary, N. Jyothiramalingam, also wanted to revive the welfare board for them.

At Thalavaipuaram near Rajapalayam, 83 labourers, including 25 women, were arrested when they attempted to stage a dharna. Meanwhile, 110 persons who tried to picket a private industrial unit at Aviyur were taken into custody. They sought compensation to farmers for "polluting agricultural land and groundwater by effluent of the unit."
