Misleading advertisement

It is really surprising that the FM radio has the audacity to broadcast totally misleading commercial advertisement. I have heard Ajinomoto being advertised as an effective food ingredient and taste enhancer.

Scientific research has confirmed that Ajinomoto, chemically monosodium glutamate or MSG in short, can cause serious damage to the body.

Why are the Food and Drug Administration authorities turning a blind eye to such misleading advertisements? Will the officials take notice?

Admission to schools

The Hindu news report (June 16) that hundreds of students applying for seats in Plus 1 classes are unable to get admission in any higher secondary schools in Tirupur makes for sad reading. While the burgeoning population of this hosiery town casts a heavy responsibility on the municipal authorities and State Government to provide all the required amenities, they should bestow special attention to education.

The problem can be tackled for the present by adopting shift system in all schools. The future requirement should be envisaged and seats increased in present schools.

More government schools for boys and girls should be constructed. Apparel exporters and millowners should lend a helping hand in the matter.

Avoid confusion

Due to the maintenance work by Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, there will be power shutdown once a month from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For consumers under the Peelamedu substation, the power supply is cut off exactly at 9 a.m. and restored at 6 p.m., which means a delay of one hour.

Authorities should intimate it as power shutdown `from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m' to the press to avoid confusion among consumers.

Entrance exam

The Chief Minister has abolished entrance examination for professional courses. If so, why should there be an entrance examination for becoming a teacher? Will the Government not have a rethink about the entrance examination that is to be held on July 10?

Telephone directory

The Telephone Department used to issue the directory every year and later once in two years. The last time they issued it was in 2000-01 corrected up to 15-4-2001. After this issue, there have been various changes in the exchanges, numbers changed from six to seven digits and new connections given. The issue of a new directory incorporating the changes have been suspended due to reasons not known.

The Department collects rent and the subscribers are not even given the basic facility of a directory. Will the authorities be customer-friendly and do the needful?

An alternative road

The proposal to develop Thimbam Ghat Road by the National Highway Department is a welcome move.

However, the alternative road as suggested, if implemented, will be more convenient in all aspects.

Work on the new railway line between Mettupalayam and Samraj Nagar in Karnataka via Sathyamangalam, Bannari and Thalamalai is likely to start sooner or later.

I am told by my elders of the area that there was a route used by Tipu Sultan between Thalamalai and Bhavani Sagar and there was a proposal to lay a road between Sathyamangalam and Thalamalai via Karachikorai during the British regime.

Now there is a road between Karachikorai and Thengumarahada of the Nilgiris running through Bhavani Sagar Forest Range.

This road must be developed and extended to Thalamalai. This road, then, will be parallel to the proposed railway line and will be more convenient with minimum climbing with just two or three hairpin bends.
