TIRUCHI: : A section of agricultural workers including some women were arrested in the city and elsewhere in the district when they attempted to picket in support of their demands, which included the implementation of the recommendations of the Kolappan Committee. The workers under the banner of Tamil Maanila Vivasaya Thozhilalar Sangam were arrested even before they could resort to picketing after assembling at the scheduled spot. The agricultural workers were arrested at Mannachanallur, Thathaiyangarpet, Thuraiyur and Uppiliapuram in the district. In the city, the farm workers planned to picket in front of the Collectorate. However, they were arrested at the Vestry School roundtana itself where they assembled and planned to take out a rally up to the Collectorate. Police personnel were posted at the roundtana to prevent the workers from resorting to picketing. The workers also demanded that the State Government revive the Agricultural Labourers Welfare Board besides guaranteeing them minimum wages, social security, housing and medical facility which had been recommended by the committee. They also urged the Centre and the State Government to ensure Tamil Nadu its due share of the Cauvery water. The workers' attempt to picket in front of the taluk offices and union offices at Mannachanallur, Thuraiyur, Thathaiyangarpet and Uppiliapuram was also foiled. Over 100 workers were held in these places. Those held were later released in the evening, the sources said.
