TIRUCHI: Petrol pumps went dry in Tiruchi, Pudukottai and Perambalur districts as petroleum dealers observed a one-day token strike on Monday, in response to a nation-wide strike call given by the Federation of All India Petroleum Traders, in support of their demands which included five per cent dealer commission. A majority of the petrol bunks in the three districts remained closed from 12 midnight. The Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Association stated that 80 per cent of the fuel outlets did not function across the state. Out of the 82 petrol bunks in Tiruchi city and elsewhere in the district, as many as 57 outlets remained closed for the day, police said. Some outlets put up boards informing the public about the strike and the closure of petrol pump. In Perambalur and Pudukottai districts, all petrol bunks remained closed, the association claimed. Meanwhile the Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Association, State general secretary, SP. Kumarappan in a statement issued here today said that 80 per cent of the total 2,250 petrol bunks across the State took part in the strike. He said that though fuel prices kept increasing at regular intervals necessitating more investments, the dealers' commission remained the same. Further, with more number of outlets coming up, sales in the existing outlets had come down drastically, he claimed. The petroleum dealers would go on indefinite strike from July 18 if their demands were not met, he added.
