Collector inspects development work

TIRUCHI: : The Collector, K. Nanda Kishore, inspected various development works being executed in Uppiliapuram panchayat union areas in the district on Monday.

He inspected residential schools run by the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department at Pachamalai, Puthur and Topsengattupatti and examined the facilities there.

He inspected the women's sanitary complex at Puthur village and asked the women to keep the complex clean, an official release issued here on Monday said.

Commissioner's inspection

The Corporation Commissioner, Harmander Singh, inspected the work undertaken by the civic body in the Srirangam and Ariyamangalam zones on Monday. He instructed the officials to keep the office unit inside the compost yard at Ariyamangalam neat and clean besides directing them to set up a small park near the entrance of the compost yard.

Mr. Harmander Singh also inspected the electric crematorium established at Oyyamari in the Srirangam zone and instructed the officials to keep the toilets and the complex clean, a release from the Corporation issued here on Monday said.

Govt.'s decision welcomed

The Tiruchi District Pensioners' Association has welcomed the State Government's decision to scrap the common entrance test for admission to professional courses. A resolution was adopted at the association's executive committee meeting held here on Sunday.

The meeting was presided over by the association's district president, K. Palaniandi.

Another resolution urged the State Government to issue an order allowing pensioners to undergo treatment in a few more private hospitals. Office-bearers of the association participated in the meeting, a release issued here said.

Councillor dead

A.P. Kulandaivelu (64), a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) councillor of the Tiruchi Corporation, passed away here on Monday.

Mr. Kulandaivelu, who had represented ward no.17, had been ill for more than a year. A two-time councillor in the Corporation, he had also served a term as a councillor in the erstwhile Tiruchi Municipality. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.

The Mayor, Sarubala R. Tondaiman, the Deputy Mayor, M. Anbazhagan, the DMK district secretary, K.N. Nehru, and others paid their last respects to the man.

Plea to declare stretch `one way'

The Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam has urged the traffic police to declare the stretch from Gandhi Market Clock Tower to Varaganeri Bazaar as a "one way" to ease traffic congestion.

In a statement, the Kazhagam's district president, S.T. Rajendran, urged the traffic police to examine the proposal and take appropriate action.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 53.35 feet on Monday. The inflow was 548 cusecs and the discharge 900 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
