Rain disrupts life, hillock collapses on Kateel Road

Heavy rains continue in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi districts

MANGALORE: There was no let up from rains in Dakshina Kannada for the third day in a row on Monday.

A mini-hillock near Karambaru-Kenjaru in Bajpe police station limits collapsed, affecting traffic on Kateel-Mangalore Road for some time. Earthmovers were used to clear the debris.

The compound wall of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat school at Padavu at Bikkarnakatte in Mangalore East (Kadri) police station limits collapsed because of heavy rains. The police, who have received a complaint from the school headmaster said removal of soil by earth excavating machines adjacent to the compound wall led to its collapse.

The police said Bajpe airport near here received a maximum of 220.6 mm of rainfall up to 8 a.m. on Monday. Rainfall recorded in other places in the district including taluk headquarters is: Puttur 168 mm, Mangalore 166.4 mm, Bantwal 150 mm, Uppinangady 139.1 mm, Belthangady 107.6 mm and Sullia 101.6 mm.

House collapse

Our Udupi Staff Correspondent reports:

A house was completely damaged and six houses were partially damaged in the heavy rain that lashed Udupi district on Monday.

Boulders put to prevent sea erosion have sunk into the Arabian Sea at Trasi and Hosadu villages in Kundapur taluk.

The people living in these areas are living in the fear of sea erosion.

The district administration said a photo studio was struck by lightning at Kollur.

The total damages caused by rain so far has been estimated to be Rs. 5 lakhs.

A house was completely damaged at Yadthady in Kundapur taluk.

The houses of Umanth Bhat at Haradalli, Sanjiva Ganiga at Ulloor, and Baby Poojary at Nadsal were partially damaged in the rains.

The tiles of the house of Devendra Nayak flew away in strong winds at Neelavar. A tree fell on a bhajana mandira at Hejmady. A house was partially damaged at Halavalli in Udupi taluk.

Floods

Water from a river flooded nearly 15 acres of land because of a breach in its embankment at Shedimane in Kundapur taluk.

Till 8 a.m. on Monday, Udupi taluk recorded 18.2 cm. rainfall, Kundapur taluk 10.6 and Karkala taluk 15.2 cm.
