Bus operators oppose fuel price increase

Special Correspondent

Good response to petrol dealers' stir in Dakshina Kannada

MANGALORE: The fuel price increase on Monday has come in for criticism from a cross section of society in Mangalore.

There is no one in the district who is not affected by the increase, said Hanumanth Kamath, president of the Nagarika Seva Vedike. Mr. Kamath said this year the petrol price has been increased by Rs. 8.39 a litre and the diesel price by Rs. 7.20 a litre.

Rajavarma Ballal, Karnataka State Bus Owners' Federation president, said: "It is impossible to run the buses at this rate and the federation will resort to agitation if the Government did not issue a new notification about the increase of rates in the private services."

Bhaskar Salian, Dakshina Kannada Bus Operators' Association president, who is the general secretary of the Canara Bus Owners' Association, said the Government has shown a terrible sense of enterprise in four years as the new notification had been put on the hold. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left parties have opposed the move to increase the fuel prices. Pratap Simha Nayak, BJP district unit president, said it is a blow to the common man and soon the party will organise a rally and public meeting in the city to protest the fuel increase.

B. Madhava, Centre of Indian Trade Unions State unit president, said the Left parties had given clear instructions to the Government against the fuel increase.

The nationwide bandh of petrol stations called by the All India Federation of Petroleum Traders, New Delhi, on Monday evoked good response in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Barring a few private owned petrol stations, rest of the stations of the public sector oil companies in the district participated in the bandh.

Satish N. Kamath, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Petrol Dealers' Association secretary, termed the bandh a success. Although a few outlets of the public sector oil companies opened for some time during the day, they later closed down, he said.
