Petrol bunks remain closed

Strike deprives vehicle owners of a chance to beat fuel price hike

BANGALORE: People did not get a chance to fill the fuel tanks of their vehicles before the fuel price hike came into effect.

Barring government-run petrol bunks, almost all the 250 retail petroleum outlets in the city were closed on Monday.

The closure was in response to a nationwide bandh called by the All-India Petroleum Traders' Federation to press for various demands, including an increase in the retailers' commission to five per cent a litre.

The bandh was total in the city, and a majority of the 1,500 petrol bunks attached to the four private petroleum companies were closed, the Bangalore Petroleum Dealers' Association president, Sqn. Ldr. G.V. Bhushan Narang, told The Hindu .

Most retail outlets in the city had suspended purchase of diesel and petrol from Sunday midnight. Sales were halted till Monday midnight.

An estimated sixty lakh litres of petrol and diesel are sold at retail outlets in the city each day.

About 90 petrol-vending outlets run by oil companies in the State reportedly functioned.

Since the bandh was announced a few days in advance, most people had stocked enough petrol and diesel to manage through the day without having to refuel their vehicles.

Those who were in the dark were shocked to see the boards announcing the closure of petol stations. Besides a hike in the commission, petrol and diesel dealers are also demanding a uniform pricing policy and devices to test the quality of petrol and diesel that is supplied to them.

Allowance for evaporation and handling losses is another demand. The associations have threatened to intensify the agitation if the Union Petroleum Ministry does not concede the demands.
