BANGALORE: Thieves felled a five-foot-tall sandalwood tree and took away the logs from the compound of a house in Siddapura police station limits in the early hours of Monday. The police said the incident occurred at the house of Susheela Hanumantha Rao on 14th Cross, 2nd Block, Jayanagar. The Siddapura police have registered a case.
Woman dies of burns
Saraswathi (30) was killed when a kerosene stove reportedly exploded at her house in Arehalli village in Whitefield police station limits on Sunday afternoon. Saraswathi's husband, Narayana, had been to work. She was alone at the house when the incident occurred, the police said.
Sentenced
The Fourth Fast-track Court has sentenced Chandrashekar Edwin Joseph (35) of T. Dasarahalli to life imprisonment for murdering his wife, Mary Selvi. The Peenya police had filed a chargesheet in the court that on November 3, 2001, Joseph doused his wife with kerosene and set her on fire.
Two die in accidents
Two persons were killed in road accidents in the city. A man aged around 40 was killed when a vehicle hit him near P&T Colony on Tannery Road around 6.30 p.m. on Sunday. He has not been identified. The Fraser Town traffic police have registered a case. In the other accident, a pedestrian aged around 70 was killed when a car hit him near Khoday Circle in Upparpet traffic police limits on Sunday night. He has not been identified. The Upparpet traffic police have registered a case.
Cheating charge
The Ashoknagar police on Saturday arrested Kalpana alias Shabana (31) of Pantharapalya on Mysore Road on charges of cheating and recovered from her cellphones worth Rs. 80,000. Kalpana allegedly claimed to be an employee of leading software firms and cheated proprietors of beauty parlours in the city by promising to get them customers, the police said. The cellphones recovered belonged to the owners of the beauty parlours, the police said.
Cellphones recovered
The Central Crime Branch (CCB) officials on Sunday arrested three persons who were allegedly selling stolen cellphones and recovered from them phones worth Rs. 1.10 lakh.
Pirated VCDs seized
The police raided two shops in Vyalikaval and Sadashivanagar and seized 2,533 pirated VCDs and DVDs, together worth Rs. 1.20 lakh.
