BANGALORE: When the 108.9-km Peripheral Ring Road is completed, motorists will have an easy access to highways leading out of the city. For long-distance travellers, it will become possible to avoid having to pass through the city. Work on the Rs. 990-crore project is likely to begin by December, and the road is likely to be completed in two years, according to the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA). It will help those living on the outskirts to avoid heavy traffic on the Outer Ring Road. The BDA is expected to approve the plan by the end of June. The authority has to go through the formality of notifying 3,477 acres of land to be acquired by mid-July. Tenders for the project have been invited. Once the technical details are finalised, work will start on packages of 9 km to 10 km each, hopefully by the end of this year. The Outer Ring Road was designed to keep truck traffic away from the city, but the growth of the suburbs defeated this objective. The Peripheral Ring Road, along with a truck terminal, is expected to be a better solution. The new road will set the outer limit for trucks to ply, the BDA has said. The peripheral road will eventually link all the highways leading out of the city, such as Hosur Road, Old Madras Road, Mysore Road, Kanakapura Road, Tumkur Road, Bellary Road, Magadi Road, Sarjapur Road, and Bannerghatta Road. All these roads will be interlinked, which will help long-distance travellers from different parts of the city. The original plans for the Peripheral Ring Road provide for 12 radial connections to the Outer Ring Road and seven underpasses where it intersects other roads. Work on all these will be carried out at the same time as the main project. The four-lane Peripheral Ring Road will be 100 metres wide with a 10-metre wide central median. It will have two services roads on either side, and a 14-metre-wide green belt beyond the service roads.
