TIRUNELVELI: The `twin towns' of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai are being spruced up with illuminated towers, ornamental lights, huge vinyl hoardings and banners to receive the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, who is scheduled to visit here on June 23 to inaugurate a memorial for the legendry freedom fighter, V.O. Chidambaram, and distribute welfare measures to the tune of Rs. 228 crore. The Chief Minister, who arrives at Vaagaikulam airport in Tuticorin district by a special aircraft by 10.40 a.m., will reach Tirunelveli by a chopper in the next 15 minutes. A special concrete helipad has been established behind Schaffter Higher Secondary School just opposite Exhibition Grounds the venue of the function. Since the Chief Minister visits Tirunelveli after the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's resounding victory in the recent byelections, the party functionaries want to utilise her visit as an opportunity to celebrate the victory. Besides erecting ten 100-feet tall beautifully illuminated towers, statues of E.V.R., C.N. Annadurai and M.G. Ramachandran have been decorated with colourful lights. Over a hundred huge vinyl hoardings greeting Ms. Jayalalithaa and depicting the achievements of the AIADMK Government have been put up at important junctions and on buildings here. All huge trees between Tirunelveli Junction and Exhibition Grounds have been illuminated. In short, AIADMK functionaries have decorated every inch of the stretch between Swamy Nellaiyappar Temple and Sulochana Mudhaliyar Bridge at Kokkirakulam. The massive pandal on Exhibition Grounds, which can accommodate over 50,000 persons, has been aesthetically decorated with palm leaves. The replica of the `Raja Gopuram' to be put up at the main entrance has been decorated with artificially coloured palm leaves. The main stage inside the pandal has been designed like a ship since VOC is known as `Kappalottiya Tamizhan.' The Minister for Industries and MLA of Tirunelveli segment, Nainar Nagendran, has made arrangements for Vaadipatti melam, oyilaattam and other programmes by renowned folk artistes for three days from June 21. "The Chief Minister would be received by women nadhaswaram performers, 21 gorgeously decorated elephants from Thrissur, pancha vaadhyam, chendai melam etc.," he said. Elaborate security arrangements have been made in Tirunelveli city. Night patrolling within the city and its outskirts has been intensified. Experts of bomb detection and disposal squads from various districts have been stationed at various important points here.
