TIRUNELVELI: Thousands of devotees witnessed the 501st Aani car festival of Swamy Nellaiyappar-Gandhimathi Ambal temple here on Tuesday. After special abhishegam, alangaaram and deepaaraadhanai, idols of Swamy Nelliayappar and Gandhimathi Ambal were installed in the renovated and beautifully decorated car, which started moving on its new iron wheels exactly at 8.30 a.m. The Minister for Adi Dravida Welfare, S. Karuppasamy, the Collector, Atul Anand, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli Range, K. Gopalakrishnan, the Deputy Commissioners of Police, N. Bhaskaran and Varadharaju, the District Revenue Officer, G. Loganathan, the Mayor, A. Jayarani, the Commissioner, D. Chandrasekaran, and thousands of devotees participated in the rituals held in the morning. As one of the tallest cars in the State moved through four car streets around the temple, various business establishments and associations here distributed water and buttermilk packets to devotees, who brought the car back to its position by 3.30 p.m. Traffic was diverted and a good number of police were deployed around the temple to regulate movement of the car and the public.
