ERODE: The district is free from water scarcity as all villages and hamlets are provided with water, said the Collector, D. Karthikeyan. Talking to The Hindu on Tuesday, the Collector said that the groundwater level had risen due to heavy rain last year. Due to failure of monsoon for the last ten years and also abundant drawl of water, the groundwater table had come down. Water was now available at 210 metres as against that of 90 metres ten years back. The Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board had dug up to 270 metres in dry areas for pumping water. Public were provided water through over 11,000 borewells in the district. The fluorosis-hit villages were already given potable water. The State Government had given Rs. 50 lakhs for drought relief operations and the Centre had given Rs. 38 lakhs. More funds were expected. Steps were taken to preserve the water sources and those who polluted them would be punished, he said. On the new water supply schemes, Mr. Karthikeyan, said that Uthukuli and 138 habitations would receive Cauvery water through the Tirupur Master Plan scheme. The work was in progress at Rs. 3.16 crores. Similarly, Bhavani water would be given to Salangapalayam, P. Mettupalayam and 122 habitations at Rs. 7.12 crore. The work had been completed within the stipulated period. Further, at a cost of Rs. 12.75 crores, a plan approved for the Cauvery water supply to Chennimalai, Perundurai and 137 other habitations would be implemented soon. Moongilpatty, Kezvani and 25 other villages; Kolappalure and 44 habitations in the area, and Karattupalayam and 48 habitations there would be provided with Bhavani water. For the three schemes, a total amount of Rs. 8 crore had been sanctioned and the work would commence soon, the Collector said.
