THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of the Opposition V. S. Achuthanandan has taken strong exception to the hike in the prices of petrol and diesel and warned the Centre of a sharp increase in prices as a result of the measure. In a statement here on Tuesday, Mr. Achuthanandan said the petroleum product price hike could have been avoided by reforming the tax structure and bringing down the excise duty on petroleum products. The tax on petroleum products came to 66 per cent of the selling price, he pointed out. Mr. Achuthanandan said that being a consumer State, Kerala would be hit the hardest by the Centre's decision. The Centre has placed a heavy burden on the people with the price hike. This called for a strong response to the measure, he said.
