PONDICHERRY: Agricultural scientist and chairman of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), M.S. Swaminathan, has stressed that quality literacy should be available for the people, particularly the younger generation as it would ensure safety for them. Inaugurating a Rural Knowledge Centre launched by MSSRF in collaboration with the Achariya Educational Trust at Pannithittu, a coastal village in Bahoor constituency, near here today, Dr Swaminathan, who is also the chairman of the National Farmers Commission, said that in the country as a whole each of six lakh villages would have such knowledge centres. People would get full information about various aspects of economic and work related details through the Knowledge centres. The facility of connectivity, capacity building and care and management details would be available through the computer-linked knowledge centre. The Centre had also accepted the relevance of opening such centres in villages. He said that the villagers particularly those residing in the coastal belt would get full details of the behaviour of the waves, availability of the fish and the centres would be managed by the functionaries of the self- help groups. The modern facility of information communication technology would bring about the digital revolution at the earliest. The centre has been sponsored by Canadian International Development Agency. The Chairman of the Achariya Educational Trust J.Aravindan, former Local Administration Minister, C.Jayakumar, MLA and the government whip, P. Rajavelu were among those who spoke. Sundara Ravikumar, principal of the Achariya College of Education,stressed the need for such knowledge centres contributing to promotion of well being of the people. Pattali Makkal Katchi Parliamentary party leader, M. Ramadass, wanted the people to use the centre. Dr Swaminathan who declared open the premises of the knowledge centre highlighted the features of the centres.
